This concert featured baritone singer Bryan Wills.  He sang twelve songs for his concert, including many that were not in English.  He did three songs in English, one song in French, four songs in Italian, and four songs in German.  Following the recital was a reception where I spoke with Bryan about his performance and the differences between performance routines for singers and instrumental musicians.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal criticalinsight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I found his performance to be incredibly interesting.  However, I would have liked some background on each of the pieces before I listened to them.  While the program did have translations for most of the songs, I was surprised that he didn’t stop between pieces to explain his next works.  Upon asking him about this, he said that the music department is highly critical of performers actually speaking to the audience, and he was therefore not allowed to interact with them.  Bryan has been a friend of mine for a long time and I haven’t heard him sing since Freshman year.  It was amazing to hear how much his voice had changed and developed.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

The thing that I found the most impressive was his ability to do such a long program and switch effortlessly between languages.  The different pronunciations and syllabic nuances of each language would have given me a headache if I were a singer.

5.) Justify your rating in the question above:

I thought that Bryan’s singing ability was unbelievable.  However, his accompanist made a few mistakes that I was able to pick up on – such as entering in early and forcing Bryan to come in late for his entrance, forcing him to start in the middle of a passage.  To clarify, I would give Bryan a 10 and the accompanist an 8.5.

1.) Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended. (This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.)

The Don Quixote exhibit features several tapestries featuring the hero of the Cervantes books.  Also, there is a collection of woodcuts and etchings that show the hero and explain the influences behind the creation of the tapestries.  Each work had a description of what was featured and where the depiction came from in the Don Quixote storyline.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal criticalinsight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

This exhibit was interesting to say the least.  However, it lacked what was supposedly the featured element.  There were only five tapestries that were featured and the vast majority were etchings and woodcuts.  While some of the tapestries were visually beautiful and quite colorful, they lacked real technique.  They were merely depictions / reproductions of the surrounding woodcuts and etchings.  Other than this exhibit, though, I enjoyed the rest of the museum.  I have been to the Frick several times and regularly go to see the paintings of Turner, Constable, and the famous works such as the painting of George Washington, which is perhaps the best known work depicting the President.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

Frankly, I was left unimpressed with the Don Quixote tapestries.  However, I am still baffled with the beauty of the Turners.  Turner has been my favorite artist for a very long time and his works always fill me with a sense of wonderment.

I had originally gone for the special collection, which I feel really let me down.  However, the etchings that were shown next to the tapestries were quite beautiful.  Also, the rest of the museum, as always, was wonderful.

The event features Jazz artist Gregory Porter singing some of his songs, including ones  in his famous Liquid Spirit.

2) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

While I am personally not too music literate, I really enjoyed the Jazz performance by Gregory Porter and his band. Porter has a strong and deep voice, yet doesn’t have any rupture when he raised his pitch, making himself a really smooth singer. The smooth voice really helps the melodies trickle down and penetrate deeper into the audience. His songs usually talk about his own struggles and emotional immediacy. For example, in his song “I Fall In Love Too Easily,” he talks about how easy he is to tall in love, and how terrible, yet irresistible it is, and how he hates all the copy and paste pattern happening to himself again. And because he usually made such a big deal out of his own emotion, or because he made things go too hard and intense, his love usually doesn’t last. Till the end of the event is more songs in his newest album “Liquid Spirit,” which demonstrates a playful personality and the mood of enjoying life. These songs usually contain playful melody, interactions with the audience and really long instrumental solos. His smooth voice, once again, contributes, in a weird and unique way, to create a playful but not overly optimistic mood to the song.

3) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was most impressed by his voice. He really has one of the smoothest voice I ever listened to and he is still able to retain strength and depth in the voice.

Overall, I really enjoy the concert by Gregory Porter. Not all the songs in the concert are good so that I could give a 10 to the event.

This event was a showcase of wearable art created by each different engineering discipline. Each major was tasked with creating outfits that illustrated the past, present, and future of the major. The outfits ranged in complexity from clothes with items glued/taped on them, to those made with cardboard structures, lights, etc.

2) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I was very impressed by the work that I saw during the event. Most people do not think of engineers as being creative in the artistic sense, however clear effort and creativity went into the construction of many of the outfits. Additionally, each major had chosen music that they walked down the runway to and many had choreographed, or at least practiced their walk. Since this was the first time this event has been held, it was also interesting to see how each major interpreted the event and the task at hand.

3) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was most impressed by the ability to create wearable art that all of the engineers displayed.

Overall I really enjoyed the event and thought that a lot of work was put in by most of  the participants. The only reason I am not rating this event as a 10 is because there were one or two majors who did not put as much work into it as others.

1.) Provide a brief detail-oriented technical description or summary of the event you attended. (This section should remain journalistic and should not be reflective of your opinion.

The Department of Theatre and Dance presented the play Dead Man’s Cell Phone by Sarah Ruhl, and was directed by a Bucknell Student for his honors thesis as a theatre major John Brunner, ’15. This two hour show was performed by a small cast Bucknell students with a simple yet effective set design. Dead Man’s Cell Phone explored the relationship with modern technology’s ability to bring together and also isolate people in today’s digital, fast-paced and always distracted age.

2.) Use the section below to write a well-structured paragraph focusing on your personal critical insight / response to the event. How did you interpret or react to what was presented to you?

I very much enjoyed attending this performance. The director, John Brunner ’15 is a  close friend to me and fellow French TA and French major, and I spent last spring speaking with him about this performance and his plans/goals as a director. After watching this performance yesterday evening, I was proud to see his ambitions to come into fruition in a clear and thoughtful manner, and that the overall show ran very smoothly. My own thesis for my Studio Art project has shared some of the main themes covered in this piece, specifically the presence/absence of the cell phone and modern day technology. I was pleased to see this concept expressed in another art form that effectively shared with the audience of ‘being present’ and ‘living in the moment’.

3.) What information, ideas, images, etc. most impressed you and why?

I was most impressed by the simple set design, and especially the incredible acting performances by my peers. It was a treat to watch my friend’s directing accomplishment come into fruition, as well as share in the overall experience of attending the play and appreciating it’s message towards the affects of technology.

I have not attended many play’s at Bucknell University, and for me this one especially was at the top of my list. I enjoyed the story line, but my only critique would be the length and the pace seemed a bit slow in parts.
