Project 3 Test Renders

Note: materials and environments will be different in final product as they are not yet ready. Also, split face model needs to be re-smoothed. The keyshot materials actually look pretty good on the makehuman models so I might just go with those if I run out of time.

S0 my optical illusion is working (there is only half a goat in there with a mirror. The car will be behind the other door) and I think I am getting closer to the final product but I got held up because my car won’t work. Once I get more light on the inside of the structure you will be able to see all of the fine details on the goat, which are very dark right now…basically, my concept is there but the details are not…

Ororbia Project 3: Sketches/Concepts

Here was where I started in terms of sketch-work and concept design for my final project.  The sixth sketch somewhat reflects what I want to go for as I was later inspired by The Awakening sculpture and wanted to incorporate its features into my work in some way (I felt the concept and the sculpture’s message could be twisted to fit my own theme of AI and the digital impact on humanity).

Blender UV unwrapping

This is the tutorial I used to unwrap custom 3D geometry to create UV maps in Blender:

http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Doc:2.6/Manual/Textures/Mapping/UV/Unwrapping

UV maps can be directly painted on in photoshop to create diffuse (color), specular (reflective), opacity, and bump maps that map very precisely to your object in Keyshot.

You will also need to know how to edit vertices in Blender and some basic photoshop skills (such as working with layers in photoshop). The link I posted links to other tutorials that help with some of the prerequisite skills

Taking shape….

I have decided to speed up the workflow a bit by leveraging a few awesome tools.  Makehuman was used to generate the OBJ file of the human body I want to use for the AI entity in the primary scene.  The modeled computer head and the body are now one continuous mesh after figuring out the right level of subdivision to get the computer head verts to line up with the neck verts before some mesh stitching was needed.  I will be building my own rig, as the ones that MakeHuman auto-generates are too limiting and I have gained ample experience building my own from Project 2.Another great Blender tool is city-generator script built into the system.  I am going to use this to get the low-poly buildings I need as the human form will actually be the terrain I have decided to have the buildings come from–very soon the rough form of the final sculpture shall come alive.  The materials overlaid on the city are representative, not by any means the actual materials meant to be used, as I will take this to Keyshot.

Project 3, Part 4

I am choosing to borrow the strategies of focusing on a dramatic pose found in comic books. I am also taking visual and philosophic inspiration from the comic book characters Two-Face (from Batman) and Venom (from Spiderman).

The visual of image of the face split down the middle with two very contrasting visages is one I will incorporate into my project. Some visual elements from Venom have also inspired my character as well.

Philosophically, Two-Face represents someone who attempts to justify evil actions that serve what he believes is a greater good, blinding himself to the evil of his own actions in the process. Venom represents the idea that an individual’s worst and most terrifying enemy is often himself, and resonates the concept of misusing newfound power.

A Conversation With 3D Artist Joshua Harker

perm_prime-1024x9121

Joshua Harker has been a maker and artist his whole life. He worked professionally as a product and toy designer for a few years before turning to 3D art. Within the last year and a half, he’s created the first and fourth most funded sculpture projects on Kickstarter, and sold thousands of beautiful works of art, all created with 3D Printing. I spoke to him about his process and his views on the current state of the 3D Printing industry.  Read more here: http://blog.makezine.com/2013/04/18/a-conversation-with-3d-artist-joshua-harker/

Custom UV unwrap and texture painting successful

In addition to editing the pre-made UV texture maps for makeHuman models I can now create, edit, and apply my own UV texture maps to makeHuman and other models I have modified with T-Splines. In the below image I have demonstrated this by coloring the mouth and skin independently on a custom UV map as a proof of concept. The material comes in to KeyShot as an advanced material, and an additional specular map will be made to eliminate the unwanted skin reflection, but keep wanted reflection as in the eyes. What question/problem did you choose? Mary The Color Scientist

Tell why you chose this topic, and why it matters to you. It is a very interesting thought-experiment about the nature of reality.

Give some details on the problem/question—explain it in depth.
Mary is a brilliant scientist who is, for whatever reason, forced to investigate the world from a black and white room via a black and white television monitor. She specializes in the neurophysiology of vision and acquires, let us suppose, all the physical information there is to obtain about what goes on when we see ripe tomatoes, or the sky, and use terms like ‘red’, ‘blue’, and so on. She discovers, for example, just which wavelength combinations from the sky stimulate the retina, and exactly how this produces via the central nervous system the contraction of the vocal cords and expulsion of air from the lungs that results in the uttering of the sentence ‘The sky is blue’. […] What will happen when Mary is released from her black and white room or is given a color television monitor? Will she learn anything or not? Jackson (1982)

List out 10 tangible people/places/things which are associated with your question/problem.

P3: Step 1 & 2 Worm holes

The question that I choose is one of wormholes and black holes in space. We do not know much about black holes and exactly what happens as objects are taken into the black holes. Black holes are massive objects in space with such a massive gravitational pull that even light cannot escape its pull due to light being forced to follow the curvature of space. Similarly, there are worm holes which only exist in science fiction and theoretical physics. Our best guess as to what happens when an object approaches a black hole is the object is destroyed and crushed. As the object is drawn in closer, the gravitational field crushes the object as well as ripping the object apart, a paradox in itself. As a star is drawn into the gravitational field, the gases from the sun are ripped off of the surface and pulled into the black hole. Worm holes are objects where mass or energy can enter the hole on one side and be transported across time, space, or into parallel universes. Sometimes in science fiction there is a belief the black holes and worm holes are the same thing in the sense that objects pulled through a black hole are not destroyed and crushed by the gravity, but also transported as if going through a wormhole.  Worm holes and black holes are something that we can only explain in theory and not much is known about these objects in space, but science fiction stories have grasped onto these objects and since then, black holes and worm holes have become a staple in these stories.

The bottom piece is the one that caught my eye at first.  The face coming out of the wall (made out of chips, small fragments/bits) fading into the background just barely visible can provide a truly subtle but powerful effect for the presence of something but without that something being truly visible at first glance (almost “big brother” like).  The other 2 images combine with that last one to reinforce the theme that technology is everywhere in our world and we have become quite integrated with it:  what would happen, I ask, if this technology developed a mind of its own?  I would like to incorporate this attribute (of the bottom image) in my final product.

Project 3, Steps 2 and 3

I chose the question of why “good people do bad things” and how or if they recognize themselves doing it. I chose this topic because I think it is very important to ethics in the modern world, where the line between right and wrong/good and evil is often blurred. It is also very important to my own life, as a similar idea is something that very often concerns and causes me problems.

In further explanation of the question, an example of what I am talking about is when people use extenuating circumstances as an excuse for actions they wouldn’t normally take. For example, police brutality in the name of revenge against a cop-killer is a common, real world example. Abuses of power, crimes in war, or acts of violence/”evil” in general almost have some kind of justification that could be argued for, especially a public support for revenge. Another essential idea is the notion of a “short fuse”, in which someone becomes angered and destructive without realizing it. Also important is the idea of unknown strength, in which someone does not realize they have as much power or impact on the world and people around them as they think, causing them to inflict unintentional harm or damage.

I am visually inspired by the following tangible things, some of them from fiction:

– Police Brutality

– Torture to prevent terrorism

– The character Walter White from Breaking Bad

– The character Venom from the Spider-man story

– Peer pressure induced bullying

– Literally the idea of a short fuse

– The death penalty

– Moby Dick, consumption by revenge

– The character two-face from Batman

– Gangs

Topic: What if we found aliens?

2. Consider and clarify your topic

My question is “what if we found aliens?” This is an important question to me and for many people. In fact, I believe that there is one of the most important questions. Many people are too fickle to seriously contemplate the thought. The “real world” that we live in is so full of distractions that few people truly care about such things. Staring up at the stars was the pastime of our ancestors (and may have been the foundation of the first religions—a controversial idea), and they wondered the same kinds of things. What is we found aliens? How would society change? How long would it take humanity to build up its defenses or tear them down, as necessary? We could find aliens or we could be found by them. We could sense their existence with our precise instruments or we could one day find them among us. We might find aliens on Mars in the form of fossilized algae or crashed spacecraft from hundreds of millions of years ago. Would aliens be like those in the movie Contact (the best kind), or the movies War of the Worlds or Independence Day (the worst kind)? If we found non-trivial aliens (e.g. plants on Venus aren’t as interesting as intelligent beings), it would change society forever. Economies, science, politics, religion, human fickleness—each would either completely collapse or be strengthened to unimaginable levels.

10 tangible, related things:

  1. Alien spaceship
  2. Earth
  3. Astronomy things, like telescopes
  4. Computers
  5. Astronauts
  6. President of the U.S. / U.S. government
  7. Area 51
  8. Enlightenment/accruement of knowledge
  9. War
  10. Explosions

Project 3, Step 1

My question/problem/paradox (it is all three) is the question of why “good people do bad things”, and how people struggle with choosing actions that are in line with their own vision or society’s vision of good and evil and recognizing the consequences of those actions introspectively.

Project 3: Phases 1-3

1. Choose a topic
The topic I have chosen to explore is consciousness, specifically that of which can exist in an artificial entity.  Questions that come with this:  Can man really build a truly intelligent system/agent?  Is it even possible to recreate human intelligence in hardware/software?  And if man was able to do this, would such a system be conscious?  Would it be wrong to enslave such a “being” since such an individal or being (even if not human or even organic) would be in effect enslaved by us humans?  Wouldn’t this give such a machine entity the right to rebel and overthrow humans?
2. Consider and clarify your topic
I chose to explore the age-old philosophical question of consciousness and whether or not this can occur in an artificial entity.  Tied with this concept are the issues of humanity holding control over such a being/entity if it truly can be/is conscious.  I am a philosophy minor, and perplexing and deep philosophical problems such as the mind-body problem have intrigued me since my Freshman Year here at Bucknell University (since I first studied it in the class “Minds, Brains, and Computers” and later in “Philosophy of the Mind”).  Further, this deep, philosophical issue relates to my long-term plans for the future, as I will be studying intelligent systems and artificial intelligence in graduate school in the hopes that one day I can fulfill the original goal of (traditional) AI:  develop a truly intelligent agent.  The issue of whether or not a truly intelligent artificial agent can be created is linked with Philosophy’s age-old exploration of the concept of consciousness.  There are many theories that try to explain consciousness and whether or not it is something that can be recreated (either it’s possible organically or inorganically–i.e. the Physicalist–or not, as consciouness is the “ghost in the system” or a property of even a physical system but exists as solely a mental, non-physical object–i.e. the Mentalist).  Ultimately, if one studies this historical debate, one would see that no conclusion has yet been reached, leaving the mind-body problem an open problem with many unanswered questions that probe deep in the essence of the human conscious experience.  10 people/places/things associated with my topic/problem: Ray  Kurzweil, Alan Turing (Turing Test), John Searle (Chinese Room Argument), MIT Computer Science & Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, Skynet, robots, HAL (2001), the human brain/mind, weaponry/war (if the intelligent system were to rebel), philosophy, chess (Deep Blue), and jeopardy (Watson).

Steps 1-3, Project 3

Addiction

For this project I chose the problem of addiction. While a wide variety of addictions exist, the most interesting and difficult ones are those which are unconscious or widely accepted. Most everyone is familiar with drug and alcohol addiction, frustrating and sometimes devastating conditions which can damage relationships and families as well as causing other societal problems. It seems that even those whom we hold up as role models are not free from the temptations of addiction which further perpetuates the culture of such actions.

The most potent addictions, as stated above, are the subconscious ones. Most recently “tech addiction” has come into its own as a major problem for some, and its persistence is a mark of just how easy it is to fall prey to something simple. Imagine the difficulty some have with relinquishing their phones for an hour or two, avoiding their email for a day, or staying off the internet for a week. For some people it is almost impossible to the point wherein the thought of it can cause some people incredible stress.

Even more painful are addictions which affect emotional ties. Many have heard of or experienced the feeling of an addiction of the heart. Often we encounter friends who seem stuck in abusive or horrible relationships and, while we might see the situation relatively objectively, they appear unable to see as we see. Herein is the most potent addiction, love. This is not to say that all love is some kind of terrible addiction, but that some love interests follow the pattern of addiction almost to a tee. Read “Of Human Bondage” and relate it to one of your friends with a bad relationship; therein is the plot. Can we see the effects of addiction? Yes. Can we empathize with addiction? Yes. Would we ever admit to being addicted to something? Denial.

Monty Hall Problem

I chose the Monty Hall problem because it is something that has perplexed me since I learned about it in high school statistics class. It stuck with me because it was one of those topics around which I could never quite grasp or accept. It is a little frustrating and I think about it every time I catch the revived version of Let’s Make A Deal on daytime television.

The Monty Hall problem revolves around a situation set in the game show, Let’s Make A Deal. The costumed contestant is faced with a choice; behind one of three doors, there is a car. If the contestant chooses the correct door, then he or she can keep the car. There are “zonks” or goats behind the other two doors which signify that the player has lost. Once the contestant chooses a door, the host, Monty Hall picks one of the other doors, always revealing a goat.

At this point it has been statistically proven that it is advantageous to switch to the other remaining door to increase the chance of winning the car. Intuitively, I at first assumed that each of the two remaining doors has a fifty percent chance of containing the car. However, this logic is incorrect, according to proven scholarly experiments and proofs.

It is said that the key to proving this problem lies with the host and his role in the situation. One must remember that he is aware of which door contains the car and which contain the goat. Therefore, he knows which of the two remaining doors have goats behind them. When the contestant chooses the first door, there is a one-third chance that it is the correct one. That means that there is a two-thirds chance that it is behind the remaining doors. When one of those doors is eliminated, there is still a two-thirds chance that it is behind the remaining door. The revealed door becomes a null option. Since two-thirds is greater than one-third, the contestant has a better chance if he or she changes her or her choice.

While this seems to make sense once explained, I still struggle understand and fully accept its authenticity because it does not seem logical. Actually, I kind of felt that way about a lot of topics in my statistics class.

Old and New, In and Out, Side by Side

The question/paradox I am going to focus this project on is one that has made me wonder a lot over the past year about a variety of cultures, traditions and more. I will focus on the idea that there is a lot of traditional aboriginal history amongst and alongside the cosmopolitan city life of Sydney, Australia. After spending last spring studying in Sydney, I absolutely fell in love with the city. It’s casual and fancy, trendy and grungy all at the same time. But the most interesting paradox I found was this ancient history of aboriginals, their drive to maintain their heritage, and how they live not so far off from this up and coming trendy city. There is a man I used to see on my way to work every morning who sat by Circular Quay in his traditional aboriginal paints and attire and played his didgeridoo. Obviously, he was there as a street performer to make money.

Aboriginals are very traditional and many keep their traditions strong. There is a very high number of aboriginal children who are illiterate and there are efforts and organizations to help end this issue. There is a high population of aboriginals that live in the outback in the middle of the country, but there are some on the coast in pockets in places like Cairns.

10 People/places/things associated with my topic include:

  • Aboriginals
  • Australians
  • Sydney
  • Alice Springs
  • Uluru
  • Cairns
  • outback
  • aboriginal art
  • Central business district
  • Iconic sydney buildings and sculptures

Paradox

One of the more interesting paradoxes I’ve come across is the time paradox. So for example if I go back in time and kill my grandfather before he meets my grandmother what would happen? If my grandfather never existed I would never have been born, so what would cause my grandfather’s death if this were to happen. There are several theories on what would happen should such a scenario occur. One theory is that several universes would be created from this event; one where I killed my grandfather and another where I did not exist. Another theory is the conservation of history. This theory states that events will happen and it will be in credibly difficult to change events. So going back to the original example I would not be able to kill my grandfather and I probably just won’t succeed, therefore history remains constant. The movie Time Machine explores this idea with the main character trying to save his fiancée from dying multiple times before giving up. One other theory that I would like to mention is that everything is predetermined. So think Harry Potter, the third book, where Harry and Hermione go back in time but they end up creating the events that occurred before they went back in time.

There are several movies that describe these events. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, Back to the Future, and Time Machine are movies that explore these ideas. In addition a book series called The Dresden Files          also describes this paradox in further detail. From these movies, 10 easily recognizable things/people are Doc, Marty, the DeLorean, the flux capacitor, a steam punk time machine, a dual trail of flame, a flying train, the time turner, Harry, and Hermione.

Proj 3 Ex 2

I chose to focus on marriage laws in America.  Currently, there is a heated debate raging on whether or not same sex couples should be allowed to marry.  I chose this topic because it is something I believe strongly in.  I believe that the government should not play a role in whether or not two individuals of legal age will be married.  I also chose this topic because it has been high publicized in the media and has attracted a lot of attention over the past few years.  A song that I tie closely to this topic is “Same Love” by Macklemore.  In this song, he says:

“It’s the same hate that’s caused wars from religion
Gender to skin color, the complexion of your pigment
The same fight that led people to walk outs and sit ins
It’s human rights for everybody, there is no difference!”

I think this is very well put and I may want to draw connections to same sex marriage and other civil rights movements throughout our history.  Currently, there are only state laws, which dictate if same sex couples can be married.  The Supreme Court recently over saw two cases on the subject and are currently debating.   The judges are debating if the Federal Defense of Marriage Act violates equal protection guaranteed in the Fifth Amendment’s Due Process Clause.  These cases include appeals from states such as California, Massachusetts and New York along with many others.  It is clear that within the next few months there will be many large changes made regarding same sex marriage in America.

I associate the following things with the subject:

  1. Wedding band ring
  2. Church
  3. Picketing
  4. Kissing/lips
  5. Supreme court/white house
  6. Hand holding
  7. Rainbow flag/colors
  8. Wedding cake topper
  9. Gender symbols
  10. Equal sign

It’s alive…it’s alive….

Now the mesh has been rigged and skinned…..and can now be posed via the skeleton I have set up rather than manipulating the verts directly…

Into Rhino (geometry transferred nicely — this is good news, that means my armatures apply their deformations correctly):

Spoils of War…

ororbia-prog1 ororbia-prog2

Significant progress was made now that I have started everything from a pure, continuous base mesh, slowly building up resolution once the form is good.  Everything, minus the “spikes” for the raptorial legs and the lower-primary “mouth” flap, is one continuous mesh.  A few things were chosen to be separate objects as I can parent those elements to a bone, rather than have the bone deform the object directly.  Since the mantid needs to “express emotion”, the mandibles will have a simple bone chain to control each for posing.  The same will go for the antennae….I’m very happy with how the mesh is turning out, especially as ridges and such are being sculpted in carefully.
